De bandrecorder – of reel‑to‑reel – is de oorspronkelijke vorm van magnetische geluidsopname. Lang voordat de cassette, 4‑track en 8‑track bestonden, werd muziek vastgelegd op open spoelen met magnetische tape. Het systeem werd in de jaren ’30 ontwikkeld door Duitse ingenieurs, maar pas na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het wereldwijd populair toen de techniek door Amerikaanse fabrikanten werd overgenomen en verbeterd.
Vanaf de jaren ’50 tot eind jaren ’70 was reel‑to‑reel hét professionele opnameformaat. Studio’s, radiostations en serieuze muziekliefhebbers gebruikten het vanwege de hoge geluidskwaliteit, brede dynamiek en lage ruis. Veel klassieke albums uit de jaren ’60 en ’70 zijn oorspronkelijk op dit formaat opgenomen.
In de huiskamer werd de bandrecorder vooral populair in de jaren ’60 en ’70, toen merken als Akai, Revox, Sony en TEAC betaalbare machines uitbrachten. Muziekliefhebbers namen radio‑uitzendingen op, maakten eigen compilaties of kochten voorbespeelde banden van hun favoriete artiesten.
