Below are a few tips. General AdviceYou’ll only know if the tapes are worth anything once you play them at home. That’s always the case with 8-tracks or similar formats (cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, CDs)—you can’t tell from the outside what’s on them or what the quality is. They may have been recorded over or stored improperly; a hot attic or damp garage is not ideal. The advantage of 8-tracks is that they’re quite durable, especially compared to cassette tapes, which use much thinner tape. Visiting flea markets takes time, but if you enjoy it, it’s a great option. The benefit is that you can see what you’re buying, though you still can’t judge the tape’s condition from the outside. Online MarketplacesOnline platforms like Marktplaats and eBay make it easier to search for tapes. In the U.S., the selection is still quite large. The downside of buying tapes from the U.S. is the shipping cost. It can be more economical to buy a large batch, as the shipping cost is relatively lower. But often, you’re just looking for that one specific tape. The quality of bulk lots varies, and you’ll often need to repair them yourself. Repairs aren’t necessarily difficult—check out my tips. When buying in bulk, I assume up to 20% of the tapes may be unusable. You’ll also end up with tapes you’re not really interested in. Be careful not to bid too high on a batch—I don’t either.
